EDITORIAL COMMENT >STUFF HAPPENS...

There are a number of items of interest on our club calendar; stuff I need to bring to the fore.

At our AGM, our president advertised an
extra meeting set for Monday 17 September to discuss the club involvement with Flora Hut. DoC staff are making the effort to attend, so I think we should. This will be an open forum to decide whether the club goes ahead with maintaining this historic hut, or not.

We also modified the Committee. The notable change was farewelling Merrick Mitchell as Minutes Secretary. He is replaced by Andrea (see Member Profile, below).

Some of you have expressed the feeling of being ‘trapped’ ... with access to the Wangapeka, Flora Saddle and up the Maitai being cut off. Despite the wet winter, a number of trips succeeded in attracting good numbers.

Well done to Lawrie for initiating a cycle trip, and for our club mascot, Stella, who did the entire route on all fours. It will sad to see her owner Marijke cross the ditch, as she follows Lee to live in Australia. They will definitely raise the average IQ.

We must also acknowledge the passing of Jenny Revell. She was very much involved in many community activities including school help, Trade Aid and singing groups.

FMC have done an admirable job in publishing the 11th edition of their Safety In The Mountains guidebook.

MEMBER PROFILE > Andrea Cockerton


1. Occupation: Nurse

2. Where were you born? I was born in Hampshire in the United Kingdom when Diana Ross was at number one on the music charts, singing Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.

3. How long have you been a member? 7 months.

4. What benefits have you found being a member? Sharing of experiences as a team, supporting each other and learning new skills and lessons. Also being with a neat bunch of people who appreciate the wilderness, each for their own reasons ...mine, spirituality.

5. Best tramp: Each walk brings something new and rewarding and has its own merits, so it would be hard to choose. I love walking up!

6. Worst tramp: I would rather say ‘unexpected outcomes’ than ‘worst tramp’ ... for example:

(a) exiting Mt Richmond via heli-chopper and

(b) being incapacitated with anxiety when coming across a herd of cows, then being ‘rescued’ by a man with a good pair of binoculars. Incidentally, (b) was not the cause of (a)!

7. Funniest moment: A crazy dare on the Heaphy Track.
8. Bucket List: Any which way but work. Two dreams I have are: i) Standing in the shadow of K2. i) Experiencing the Bering Sea.


AGM Report

The 70th Annual General Meeting of the club was held at the usual venue, with 26 members and 7 visitors present.

Lawrie Halkett presided over the formalities, which included the nomination of Committee Members. The election of officers was as follows:

Lawrie requested members to put their names forward to replace himself and Pat Holland at the end of this new committee’s term.

Brenda Griffin presented the financial report, before Ray Caird entertained us with his adventures tramping over the Pyrenees and through Spain for 30 days.

In 2011 Ray (and Rosalie Hosefield in 2001) walked this famous pilgrims trail. The Camino de Santiago is the world heritage trail that meanders for 800 km from France through the mountains, the villages and the plains of Spain to the coast at Santiago de Compostela. Ray presented videos and slides with Spanish music. He and Rosalie shared their stories about the Refugios, the wine, and the blisters.

Future for Flora > SPECIAL MEETING

  3. Where: Staff room, Nelson Intermediate School, Tipahi Street

The NTC committee has been in discussions with DOC, Motueka re the club taking some responsibility for maintaining historic Flora Hut, Kahurangi National Park.

This meeting is an opportunity to hear about the options, advantages/disadvantages and to have your say before the committee makes any commitment.

Three DOC staff will be in attendance and will give a brief overview of current DOC activities in the region.

Evening Format:

a) What DOC has been doing in the region for the past 12 months and the priorities for the next year.

b) Flora Hut history, current uses, needs, vision for future.

c) Lawrie Halkett (Club President) summarises the options with input from the floor on the potential roles for NTC.

Please put this in your diary – a degree of commitment will be required now and in the future if the club is to proceed.

It is also an opportunity to meet with DOC staff who are
under considerable pressure due to funding cuts.

Christmas is coming! And so is our annual social get-together around the table. A chance to show off your skills with a camera and show us where you’ve been tramping all year.


WANNA TRAMP WITH SHAUN BARNETT?

  • When: 29-30 SEPTEMBER
  • Where: Balloon Hut & Mount Peel, Kahurangi National Park

Prior to his speaking engagement with us at our regular club night, Shaun (and Ray Salisbury) are co-leading a moderate tramp in Kahurangi National Park.

Starting out near Myttons Hut, we’ll ascend the old Salisbury stock route onto The Tablelands.’

After a comfy night spent at Balloon Hut, we’ll make a dawn ascent of Mount Peel, drink in the view, then return down the northern spur directly to the Cobb Valley, like surveyor James McKay (allegedly) did way back in 1858. (He named a local peak Mt Peel, and Ray is on a fact-finding mission to verify his historical journey.)

You are ALL welcome to join us. However, Shaun & Ray intend on bagging Lake Sylvester Hut on Sunday evening, and returning on Monday.

Call for Help > SOUTH ISLAND TRAVERSE

We are looking for some assistance next summer to place food drops.
> Could members of your club assist?

Janis Russell and I are planning a traverse of the Southern Alps from Te Wae Wae Bay, Southland, to Fossil Point from 1 December 2012 until 30 April 2013, taking in Fiordland and much of the Southern Alps.

We can send the detailed spreadsheet of days, routes etc. We are planning to come up through Nelson Lakes, through St. Arnaud or Lake Rotoroa, over Mount Owen, traverse the Arthur Range, and then head out through the Cobb, Lonely Lake, Boulder Lake, and through Kaituna to Golden Bay.

All the planned food drops we have in your area are near road ends as follows:

  1. Lake Rotoroa (we may change this one to St. Arnaud depending upon final decisions regarding exact route through Nelson Lakes National Park.
  2. Rolling Junction Hut, Wangapeka
  3. Trilobite Hut, Cobb valley
  4. James Road-end

At the moment, the plan is come into Rotoroa on 6th April 2013 – so essentially, we are talking putting the drops in during late March and/or April 2013. Of course, all dehydrated foods will be prepared before we go, and parcelled up and posted.

We are also pretty amenable to any of your club members that might like to join us. We are both members of the Over Forties Tramping Club here in Christchurch and members of the local section of NZAC. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you.
